Reading S.T.A.R.S. I
Sensory Training Approach to
Reading and Spelling
The Reading S.T.A.R.S program utilizes a multi-sensory approach to assist children in understanding the Sound/Symbol relationship by using mouth pictures, fun names for pairs of similar sounds that we call “brothers”, and using colored block cubes to represent phonemes that we push together and blend to read words.
During the program:
- Children are able to see, hear, and feel sounds.
- Children categorize the speech sounds in way that avoids common reversals between sounds that are often confused.
- Material is presented in a hands-on interactive environment, where children are allowed to make independent “discoveries” about sounds. Music, movement, stories and games are used to make learning fun!
- Teachers are trained to guide children to make these unique discoveries about sounds.
- Children are motivated to learn more about reading and spelling from the success they are allowed to achieve with Reading S.T.A.R.S.
