Talk-To-Learn
ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN
(Grades K - 4)
What is Talk-To-Learn about?
Talk-To-Learn is a Language Enrichment Class for children (kindergarten through 4th grade) whose home language is not English. The class addresses what teachers expect of children in the classroom. Talk-To-Learn is designed to speed-up your child’s ability to understand and use the English Language.
Is Talk-To-Learn right for your child?
If your child has been identified at school (by The California English Language Development Test- CELDT) as requiring increased English proficiency (especially at the Beginning, Early Intermediate or Intermediate ELP Levels), Talk-To-Learn will be of great value. Classes are small (sub-grouped by age) and fun, and are experienced more like play and camp than school.
How will my child benefit from Talk-To-Learn?
English Language Proficiency is essential to academic success. Being able to speak, understand, read and write English will enable your child to develop high self-esteem, self-confidence, and positive relationships with other children. Talk-To-Learn is designed to meet these vital needs.
What is the theory behind Talk-To-Learn?
The class follows Constructivism Learning Theory so that your child will acquire English Language skills through the interaction between what is already known and fun-filled, high interest activities (Total Physical Response – TPR). Your child will be intrinsically motivated to learn and then will be delighted with the personal satisfaction of communicating in English.

What is the class content of Talk-To-Learn?
The curriculum follows the English Language Arts Content Standards of your child’s school. Four areas are covered: 1) Listening (comprehension and following directions); 2) Speaking (describing people, places, things, actions, and retelling stories and poems); 3) Reading (concepts about print, phonemic awareness, rhyming, and using decoding strategies to read); and 4) Writing (copying the alphabet and common words, writing sentences, stories, and personal journals).
What will my child be doing in the class?
Above all, your child will be having fun! We will be playing games, reading stories and poems, singing, drawing pictures and writing. We will be sharing and learning about one another, who we are, what we do and what is special to us.
How will I know what my child is getting out of the class?
Your child will be bringing home activities and projects to share with you. Also a portfolio will be created for your child and maintained as a record of their accomplishments. The portfolios will reflect the school’s English-Language Arts Content Standards.
